A Culinary Extravaganza - Starts with New York Bagel Café

So I just returned from over two months in Mazatlan, Mexico with plans of eating at and blogging about several restaurants a day.  Well, that was a dismal failure!  I hardly ate at all.  While I still did enjoy several of the great restaurants and much great food, it did not meet expectations.  So I returned to Edmonton, Alberta with a plan to hit some "new to me" restaurants and maybe a few that are regulars that we love.  I was going to call it "10 restaurants in 10 days" but something close to that was already taken - and we've already surpassed the 10 restaurant mark.  So I'll call it A Culinary Extravaganza - and we'll start with our first meal back - brunch at the New York Bagel Café.

New York Bagel Café is a standard for us, but having said that we only discovered it in the last several months but we have visited at least a half a dozen times - it's that good!  This place is cute, quaint and the best Eggs Benedict ever!

Currently there are 36 different versions of Eggs Benedict on the menu.  The Rossini - with Fois Gras and Truffles - is decadent, delicious and divine! It was absolutely to die for! It's the most expensive Eggs Benny on the menu at $26 (most are $20) but well worth the splurge.

On this visit I tried the Smoked Goose Breast with Grilled Apples. It was soooooooo good! It's very salty but absolutely delicious. I always choose the cheddar bagels but you have a choice including plain, whole wheat and pumpernickel. The bagels are excellent. But the most important thing is that the eggs are cooked perfectly every time and the homemade hollandaise is delicious. The side potatoes are tasty and they offer a nice selection of fresh fruit as well including passion fruit, peaches, fresh berries and melon.

We have always found the wait times and service to be very reasonable for such a small and busy location. We have waited between 10 minutes up to a half an hour for a table but you always meet interesting people in line and there's so much to look at in this quaint space. And once seated the service is reasonably quick for such a busy place.  The house coffee is also a big hit. It's an expresso served with steamed, frothy milk that you add.

Other notable ingredients and combinations - smoked goose, smoked duck, lox, Beef Burger Patty and Sliced Dill Pickle, Steamed Oysters, Steamed Spinach and Bacon, Polish Blood Sausage, Polish Smoked Sausage, Spicy Chorizo Sausage and Polish Smoked Cheese, Prosciutto and Steamed Asparagus, Prosciutto and Grilled Apple, Stilton Cheese, Havarti, and 11 vegetarian options.  They have other things on the menu as well besides Bennies - but I honestly haven't looked that closely at the rest of the items!
In the summer there is also a nice little patio and there is free parking in a lot out back.
I highly recommend you try this place. I'm thrilled that we found it - a little surprised it took me being in Edmonton for five years before I did!
