We're from BC so remember the good ol' days of Mr. Mikes so were surprised to hear there was one in West Edmonton Mall. On the urging of some friends, we decided to go with some out of town guests.
The first impression was not good. There were five of us so they placed us in a booth. The bench was covered in food crumbs from the last guests, broken crayons etc. When I told the hostess she asked if we wanted to be seated at a different table! Ah, yeah (and perhaps you might want to clean this one!)
After that the evening was pretty good. I was impressed with the extensive menu and the reasonable wine prices. I wouldn't pay $13.99 again for my husband's Bulldog but he enjoyed it so that's all that matters. I had to laugh at our young server. When my friend asked for an "original" martini she indicated that they don't make those there! But he could have one of the fruity martini's on their martini list. Of course, when she returned from the bar she of course stated that they do make original martini's and she learnt what a "dirty" martini was and got it right!
We started with the Lobster Dip appetizer. It was very good. There were a number of appetizers on the menu that looked good. Then three in our party had the original Mike Burger. They were as good as we all remembered. My friend had the ribs that she said were delicious and fall off the bone. She prefers a more tangy bbq sauce but that is just personal preference and she would have liked some of the steamed vegetables that I got with my meal. I ordered the chicken stuffed with shrimp and spinach, wrapped in phyllo and topped with hollandaise sauce. Now that's my kind of dish! And it didn't disappoint. It was really tasty. Excellent in fact. The phyllo was buttery and crunchy and the filling was a winning combination. The hollandaise sauce was about the best I've ever tasted. It's too bad they don't serve breakfast as I'm always on the hunt for the best Eggs Benedict and with that hollandaise sauce their's would definitely be good.
And they had an impressive desert menu as well. Overall, a nice experience. Don't know if I'd make a special trip back to eat there because there's just so many places to try in Edmonton but it was good for what it is and the prices are reasonable.

We decided to go here for a mid week easy meal. It was really okay for what it is. The first impression was not good. There were five of us so they placed us in a booth. When we originally arrived we were not impressed at all. The booth we were provided was dirty from the previous diners and had not only left over food remnants but broken crayons etc. When we complained our server asked us if we wanted to be moved to another table - uh, duh!
When we were seated our dinners were actually good. I was impressed with the extensive menu and the reasonable wine prices. I wouldn't pay $13.99 again for my husband's bulldog but he enjoyed it and that's all that matters. I had to laugh when our friend asked the young server for an "original" martini and she said "we don't make those here" but he could have one of the fruity martinis on the menu. Of course when she returned from the bar she advised that they did make original martinis and she learnt what a dirty one was and they got it right!
There were a number of appetizers on the menu that looked good. We settled on the Lobster Dip and it was very good. My husband had the Mike Burger which was good and our friend had the ribs which he said were fall off the bone and delicious.

The hollandaise sauce was one of the best I've ever tasted. Seriously Trip Advisor - what is your criteria for making a restaurant #1 out of 1965 restaurants in Edmonton, many of them absolutely excellent?? I have said this as well about a previous restaurant that was #1 and quickly dropped to #7 - but even then it doesn't make sense. This restaurant has only 25 reviews. Under no circumstances or criteria is it the absolutely best restaurant in Edmonton that everyone has to visit.
Is it ok? Yes. Will we return? No. It is a little place and compared to similar kinds of operations this is just fine. It is certainly not fine fining but nor does it intend to be. There are a small number of tables that were full the whole time we were there. The decor is tired with stained carpets, marks and scratches on the wall and pan flute music playing in the background. There is a vacuum sitting in the corner of the dining room and two more stored in the bathroom. Perhaps the ambiance at the front of the restaurant is better but we were seated at the back and all we saw was the older bus lady continually going from the back storage/kitchen area to the front kitchen carrying a tray of dirty dishes, back and forth, back and forth, leaving the door open so we could see into the storage area just pass the bathrooms. Not a nice ambiance by any stretch of the imagination. As she was walking back and forth she kept getting closer and closer to our table and at one point almost walked right into me to the point where she had to apologize. When we were leaving to pay our bill we had to wait and then had to wait some more when they over loaded the power breaker and had to go flip the breaker to get the cash register and credit card machine working again.
So - for the food. It was okay. We are always on the hunt for the best Eggs Benny and, although we couldn't find a menu for this place, I saw a review on TA mentioning Shrimp Eggs Benny so I went looking to try these. Well, the Shrimp dish is actually scrambled eggs in a cheese sauce with cajun shrimp on it and hollandaise. Although not traditional, I thought I would try it and it was okay. Nothing I'd go back for but nothing to complain about. My husband thought he would be adventurous as well and thought he'd try the Eggs Benny on waffles instead of english muffins. Well, this was weird. We kind of thought they might have small waffles the size of english muffins but it was one big waffle, topped with two basted eggs with ham and covered with hollandaise. Again, it was okay but nothing we would have again.
So, overall, glad we went to be able to try it and write a review but we won't be going back. We asked to see their dinner menu and there certainly wasn't anything that would make us make a special trip. Nothing overly inspired. Not a terrible place if this kind of place is what you are looking for but Trip Advisor - come on - there is no mathematical formula in the world that makes this place the best restaurant in Edmonton!
